Research Group from CBGS wins the first prize of Tai’an Scientific and Technological Progress Award

Research Group of Biotechnology for Bioenergy Plants from Shanghai Chenshan Plant Science Research Center, cooperated with the Tai’ an Academy of Agriculture Sciences and the Institute of Plant Physiology& Ecology, Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences, CAS, participated in the research work of  ‘Molecular breeding of sweet potato with high yield and improved starch quality’ has accomplished and received the first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award in Tai’an, Shandong Province. Professor ZHANG Peng and Dr. YANG Jun, as the lead partner of the research involved the implementation progress of the results.
The results developed new varieties of starch-rich sweet potato with the improved hybrid method of combination artificial and natural pollination, and developed new methods of rapid propagation technology based on tissue cultivation and starch quality improvement method based on biological technology. During the development of the project, 120 different sweet potato germplasms were introduced and 3 elite sweet potato cultivars were bred. Cultivars “Thaizhong No. 6” and “Thaizhong No. 9” had been approved by Crop Evaluation Committee for New Varieties of Shandong Province in 2010 and 2012 respectively. The new varieties have been disseminated on more than 130,000 hectares, gaining significant economic benefit of more than 100 million Yuan. In this project, one patent for invention was authorized and more than 10 academic papers were published. Three bases for sweet potato R&D were also established. All of the achievements have significantly improved the industrial development of sweet potato in the area of Huan-Huai region and Yellow-river Delta.
