Dr. Tian's lab is working on classification, introduction and domestication, cultivation and propagation, adaptability assessment, breeding and commercial promotion of ornamental plants, as well as horticultural extension. Research is mainly focused on lotus (Nelumbo), begonia, herbaceous peony and some other important ornamentals.

Dr. Tian has published 4 new taxa of plants and bred 18 new cultivars of ornamental plants. He holds 5 patents and has published over 40 papers. He is the senior membership of Botanical Society of China (BSC), life membership of Chinese Society for Horticultural Science (CSHS), the board member of Lotus Branch of China Flower Association, lifer membership and board member of International Waterlily & Water Gardening Society (IWGS), International Lotus Registrar, and the membership of International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), Amercian Begonia Society (ABS) and other societies.
